Let’s be clear. The Bible identifies specific sins, and there must be no compromise in this area. However, from a practical perspective, we are to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Phil. 2:12). In the Christian walk there are a few gray areas where the Bible does not indicate one way or another about a specific issue. One such example is cremation. Some believers are fine with the process, and others would never permit a loved one to be cremated. This is an area of working out your own convictions. If a believer holds to a conviction, even though others may not hold the same belief, each believer should maintain his or her own convictions and not compromise for the sake of another person’s opinion or pressure or to gain another’s approval. It is possible that compromise could lead to a temptation that could open the door to sin. It is important not to lead yourself into temptation. As an example, when we hire a person to work in our ministry, every person must be approved by my wife, Pam, especially any female worker. We must know about their level of spirituality, work ethic, and their relationship with their companion. Many years ago a fellow minister was going to move to town and had asked if his wife could work part-time in the ministry. They were a very sweet and personable couple; however, I sensed something about the woman that made me uncomfortable. I told Pam, “I’m not sure what it is, but I don’t think it would be good for her to work here, or, for that matter to work around me.” Pam had already sensed the same, and we turned down the offer.
