Smoking actually causes hypertension in many smokers, as the chemicals cause the blood vessels to narrow, causing blood to move slower. Research has now proven that there is also great danger in secondhand smoke. Other individuals in the family who are not smokers, by being in a car or a room with a smoker, breathe the secondhand smoke—the smoke coming from the lit cigarette in the room and out of the mouth of the smoker. Secondhand smoke is just as dangerous as the smoke entering the smoker’s lungs. This alone is a great motivator to break the habit. According to American Cancer Society resources, each year there are an estimated forty-six thousand deaths from heart related diseases linked to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke also causes an increase in asthma and asthma-related problems, including respiratory infections in children. The bottom line is that secondhand smoke can actually kill children and adults who are nonsmokers but are present in the house, room, or car with a smoker! 9 W HEN T RYING TO Q UIT Many Christians picked up the smoking habit prior to their conversions.
