T HE C RAVING —N ICOTINE Just as coffee contains caffeine, cigarettes contain a substance called nicotine , a natural drug in tobacco that is highly addictive over time and is the main substance that leads to dependency. Nicotine is an analkalois , a colorless and highly addictive chemical. In the past, when farmers would plant their crops, they would take tobacco and mixit with water and spray their plants to protect them from insects. This was one of the ways in which my grandfather William Stone, from West Virginia, kept insects from eating his plants; the nicotine killed the bugs . As a person inhales the smoke, the nicotine is carried into the lungs and absorbed into the bloodstream and up to the smoker’s brain within a matter of seven to ten seconds after being inhaled. 6 Tobacco is also chewed or dipped; snuff is made to be placed directly in the mouth. Research indicates that nicotine affects the heart rate, the blood vessels, the hormonal system, and a person’s metabolism. When a woman smokes, nicotine can be found in the breast milk and the cervix mucus. 7 When nicotine is released in the blood, it impacts the neurotransmitters in the brain and releases dopamine in what is called the reward circuits of the brain, giving the person that sudden sense of relaxation or that good feeling a smoker claims to experience. 8 However, the nicotine acts as a depressant and actually interferes with the information that flows between the nerve cells.
