spiritual blessings, including having their prayers answered. Let me first confess that, thankfully, I have never had the desire at any time in my life to smoke or use tobacco products. I am actually allergic to cigarette and cigar smoke, and when entering a room where any smoker has been, my eyes water, my sinuses close up, and I become very uncomfortable. I also have a sensitive nose, which I teasingly say is as sensitive “as a dog,” and can smell the smoke at a long distance. This has worked to my personal advantage as a teen, since I could have never smoked because of my body’s reaction to it. However, others have no such reaction to tobacco smoke. When we were growing up in the Full Gospel churches, no one in the congregation was received as a member into the church if he or she had a smoking habit. However, once the person was sanctified and the habit was broken, membership was permitted. One reason given for withholding membership was that the habit was defiling the temple of the Holy Spirit: “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are” (1 Cor. 3:16–17). Another reason was that it was not a good testimony to the youth in the church or to those in public. The denomination had a sincere desire that their members live a life of sanctification and holiness not only within the church walls but also outside the church in the community.
