CHAPTER 16 BREAKING HABITS THAT CREATE HINDRANCES
I F A CHRISTIAN has never indulged in or felt a sense of bondage from some form of a habit that became addictive, it is often difficult for that person to understand why a person who has, for example, a smoking habit, can’t just quit cold turkey and lay aside the weights (or, at other times, certain sins) that are easily besetting them (Heb. 12:1). It is because within certain habits there is a mixture of chemicals or addictive agents that cause the neurological system to depend upon the continuation of the habit in order for the person to maintain that feel-good feeling. Often it is not until a medical report reveals that, for example, a smoker has been stricken with a disease or physical malady resulting from the habit that the motivation arises from within to seek freedom from the particular habit. I have known of many people who truly love the Lord and regularly attend church but who have a smoking habit. At times the individuals have approached me, wondering if the habit can actually be a roadblock to certain
