a rush of a chemical called adrenaline , which, when released, causes the heart to race, breathing to increase, and, at times, the palms of the hands to sweat. Men are more likely than women to be thrill seekers and risk takers—in more ways than one. In the beginning God gave Adam “dominion” (Gen. 1:26). In Genesis 10 Nimrod was a “mighty hunter” (v. 9); Esau was also a man of the field who was a hunter (Gen. 25:27). I was born and raised in West Virginia, the place I call world headquarters for deer hunters! Personally, hunting never appealed to me, as I had difficulty imagining the boredom (actually my impatience) of sitting for hours in one spot waiting for a deer to cross my path. However, hunters from the mountains will put on camouflage, take snacks and a thermos of coffee, bring their best rifles, and sit in a deer stand for hours of a day, days on end, to get that prize buck, and stuff its head, mounting its rack on the wall in their living rooms. The bragging rights last until the next year, when the process is repeated. This hunter nature in men kicks in and motivates them to pursue deer and occasionally a dear —a two-legged female. My wife and I have been puzzled when seeing a rather average looking man with a beautiful wife become unfaithful with a woman who is, as we should say, rather homely in her physical appearance. Those who knew the situation pondered as to how a man could be so deceived as to fall for a female who was far less attractive and with less personality than his beautiful wife. One of the answers is a simple phrase: the thrill of the chase .
