From October 6–25, 1973, Israel was surprised by a secretly planned invasion of Syria joined by an Arab coalition of Egyptian armies, in what would later be termed the Yom Kippur War. The Egyptian forces stormed in from the south, crossing the Israeli-held Sinai Peninsula, while the Syrians coordinated an assault from the Golan Heights in the north. The war occurred during the Jewish feast and fast day of Yom Kippur and the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Because the Israeli soldiers were in the synagogues praying and spending the day fasting, Israel was caught off guard, allowing Syrian tanks and troops to move swiftly and unrestrained from the border of Syria into Israel. There was a small Israeli community, called a kibbutz , located in the northern section of Israel, just over one of the large hills found in the Golan Heights. The men in the community discovered what was occurring and had no way of defending their community—except for one old tank with a few missiles. The Israelis moved the old tank near a ridge, and when the Syrian tanks made their move toward them, they shot one of the missiles! The Syrians were surprised and actually stopped their movements. Oddly enough, this one tank and the wise reaction of the men caused the Syrians to wonder if there were more tanks and if they were headed into a trap!
