to the mountain the second time to receive a new set of the Ten Commandments on stone tablets, after he broke the first set in anger over the Israelites worshipping a golden calf (Exod. 32:19). This generation of cow worshippers and individuals who left Egypt were not permitted to inherit the Promised Land due to their sin of idolatry (Num. 14:22–23). Thus God “visited their iniquity” by removing their inheritance from them. The Lord knew that if idolatry were permitted among the fathers, the sin would continue through the sons and the children of the third and fourth generations. This was a warning of judgment on the iniquity of idolatry. The same warning of visiting the iniquity on the fathers is also found in a third reference in Deuteronomy 5:9, which reads similarly to the two Exodus passages. However, there is an important addition to the warning found at the conclusion of the Deuteronomy passage: . . . visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. —D EUTERONOMY 5:9–10 There are two very important points seldom emphasized when teaching that a Christian can be under a generational curse. The first point is the visitation of iniquity, which comes to those who “hate” the Lord—not to those who “love” Him and “keep His commandments.” This is stated in both Exodus 20:6 and Deuteronomy 5:10.
