generation because they “did not know the time of [their] visitation” (Luke 19:44). The Greek word for “visitation” is the word episkope and can mean, “an inspection (for relief).” 2 God intended to bless and bring relief to His holy city, but the people’s actions instead brought destruction to the temple and to Jerusalem about forty years later in A.D . 70. Christ said that Jerusalem’s destruction was a result of shedding the innocent blood of the righteous from Abel to Zechariah the son of Berechiah, who was slain between the porch and the altar (Matt. 23:35). Notice that God paid a visit of judgment because the iniquity of shedding innocent blood had been passed down. When placing the Exodus 20:5–6 passage in the context of the subject matter, the Almighty was instructing Israel to have no other gods except Him. Israel was to serve the one and only true God. In verses 3–4 the Almighty was forbidding His people from worshipping the likeness of any living creature. Thus, if they did commit idolatry, God would visit their iniquity, or allow judgment for their sin. This literally occurred when Israel later worshipped the golden calf while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments. After forty days Moses returned to the camp and saw the Hebrew idolaters dancing before the golden idol. Moses instructed the Levites to slay the sinners, and three thousand of the covenant breakers were slain for their actions (Exod. 32:28).
