The pagan tribes were very much into worshipping the dead, as was indicated in God’s warnings to the Hebrew people. The Almighty told His chosen not to put any “cuttings in your flesh for the dead” (Lev. 19:28), neither should they “shave the front of your head for the dead” (Deut. 14:1). This information undergirds my point: the familiar spirits are familiar with information from the past and are able to relate it through the voice of a person who opens himself or herself up to being controlled or possessed by these spirits. In what is called the New Age movement, individuals connect to strange spirits by channeling them through their own physical bodies. Some claim these are “ascended masters” from the past whose spirits roam through the cosmos bringing supernatural or divine insight into numerous cosmic mysteries linked with life.
