He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things. —E PHESIANS 4:9–10 What was the purpose of Christ’s descent into the lower chambers of the earth? Peter wrote: For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison. —1 P ETER 3:18–19 After Christ cried, “It is finished!”, from the cross (John 19:30), His spirit descended into the chamber for the righteous as He preached to the spirits of the righteous dead. We must remember that these spirits in a place called “Abraham’s bosom” (Luke 16:22) would have included Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and his sons, David, the prophets, and all Hebrew people who had died in a covenant relationship with God under the Law of Moses. Many of these individuals would have lived under the Law of Moses for fifteen hundred years.
