daughter when they come to me asking for forgiveness. I cannot refuse them, and I am proud they saw their error and are striving to do better. When Peter asked Christ how often he should forgive a brother who transgresses against him, he suggested, “Seven times?” Jesus answered to forgive seventy times seven, which totals four hundred ninety times. In actuality, Christ was emphasizing to Peter and all others that they should be willing to forgive an offending brother as often as necessary. To be released from conviction requires repentance, and to be released from condemnation requires knowledge. Paul wrote: There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. —R OMANS 8:1 In Romans chapter 8 Paul dealt with the struggle between the flesh and the Spirit. The flesh cannot understand the things of the Spirit, and the Spirit cannot abide with the things of the flesh. It is like mixing oil and water—they separate and never join. Condemnation will cease when we walk to please the Spirit of the Lord and not the flesh. The flesh is weird, because it begs to be fed, but once you feed it, then it begins to make your spirit man feel sick. Once you begin to feed the spirit man using the Word of God, prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers, the flesh nature is brought under control to the will of the Spirit.
