prevent his or her spirit from being stained by the sin. The power of asking for forgiveness cannot be underestimated. A story I shall never forget came to me from a minister I knew who fell into the sexual sin of adultery with a married woman from his church. He said that each time he sinned, he would return to his office and pray for hours, vowing he would never do it again. But the seductive power of the woman would overwhelm him. For six months he would repeatedly sin, then beg for mercy, sin, and ask for forgiveness. He said, “One day I got up and said to myself, ‘I am so tired of asking for forgiveness that I’m not asking anymore.’” That day he was caught with the woman, and in a few days he lost his church. Months later his wife separated from him. He told me something profound: “As long as I was sincerely seeking God’s help and wanted deliverance, God extended His mercy in my struggle. However, when I was overcome by my actions and chose not to turn to God, then God turned me over to being exposed.” This should not give a false confidence to anyone who is secretly sinning and repenting, thinking that as long as you repent, you will never be exposed, for some individuals are exposed the first time they fall. I do believe, however, that God is merciful when a person is sincerely seeking His help on a consistent basis, because God is moved by humility and submission to His Spirit. I have often wondered if God ever becomes weary of the same child asking for forgiveness from a struggle he is engaged in. Then I began to think about my own son and
