For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. —R OMANS 8:26–27 One of the believer’s greatest weaknesses is not knowing what to pray for. We know how to pray—to the Father in Jesus’s name (John 15:16; 16:23). We know who to pray to and where we target the prayer, but it is the what that restrains us. If we are uncertain of what to pray for, then certainly Satan is uncertain of what God’s plans are for our lives! The reason the Spirit “makes intercession through groanings” is that there is a prayer language of the Holy Spirit that bypasses the human intellect (1 Cor. 14:14–15), and if the human intellect is unfruitful, then there is a strong possibility that the intercession of the Holy Spirit through your prayer life hinders the adversary from discovering the will of God for you.
