Luke 8:31 reveals that the demons in the man of Gadera prayed that Jesus would not “command them to go out into the abyss.” The Greek word for abyss is translated as the “bottomless pit” in Revelation 9:1–2. Thus these spirits knew their final doom hundreds of years before Christ began His public ministry. Certain types of odd-looking creatures are bound in the bottomless pit and will be released for a season during the Tribulation. (See Revelation 9.) The obituary of Satan was written more than nineteen hundred years ago by John in Revelation 20, who predicted Satan’s final destiny would be the “lake of fire” (v. 10). G OD R EVEALS H IS W ILL S UDDENLY I was studying the lives of the ancient patriarchs when I noticed something that I had never observed before. At times the will of God was made known before a person’s birth or early in that person’s life, and a battle often ensued after God’s will was publicly discussed or announced. However, when the time for the will of God to be fulfilled arrives, it always arrives suddenly and, at times, unexpectedly. I believe the reason for this swift fulfillment was to prevent the enemy from having time to plot disruption of the assignment. Joseph was given a prophetic dream as a teenager concerning his destiny. At age seventeen he was sold as a slave, landed in Egypt working in a rich man’s house, was falsely accused of adultery, and subsequently spent years in the king’s prison.
