Luke 8:31 reveals that the demons in the man of Gadera prayed that Jesus would not “command them to go out into the abyss.” The Greek word for abyss is translated as the “bottomless pit” in Revelation 9:1–2. Thus these spirits knew their final doom hundreds of years before Christ began His public ministry. Certain types of odd-looking creatures are bound in the bottomless pit and will be released for a season during the Tribulation. (See Revelation 9.)
