point of attempting to push Christ off a cliff (Luke 4:29). On another occasion, while He was ministering in Jerusalem, the religious opposers of Christ considered stoning Him, but Christ escaped from their hands (John 10:31–39). The New Testament reveals several secret plots to remove Christ from public ministry—all planned by the religious hierarchy—but each time they failed (Matt. 21:46; Mark 12:12; John 7:30; 10:39). When the time came for Christ’s redemptive assignment to be fulfilled by His death on the cross, He informed His disciples that the prince of the world was coming, but he had “no hold” on Him (John 14:30, NIV ). The Amplified sums up the meaning of this statement this way: I will not talk with you much more, for the prince (evil genius, ruler) of the world is coming. And he has no claim on Me. [He has nothing in common with Me; there is nothing in Me that belongs to him, and he has no power over Me.] —J OHN 14:30, AMP Christ was enlightening His followers concerning the events that would follow within a few hours. Christ would pray until His sweat became as drops of blood as He agonized in the Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:44). He was arrested, stood trial, was beaten with a Roman whip, and was later crucified. Christ wanted His closest disciples not to think that Satan had finally gained the upper hand, because His death was in the plan of God and not in the plan of Satan. Christ would “lay
