W HY M EN O FTEN F IGHT IN P RIVATE Both men and women fight personal and private battles, but men seem to struggle more with revealing their weakness than women. Men are hunters by nature and are designed by their Creator to take dominion and authority over God’s creation (Gen. 1:26–28). This desire to dominate can be seen when a fellow will sit in a boat in the hot sun for hours attempting to catch that eight-pound bass in the lake. Or when the man stands for hours in twenty-degree weather in a deer stand, hoping to come home with that buck’s rack to mount above his fireplace mantel. When it comes to hunting, fishing, sports, and even trying to chase the perfect woman down the aisle of the church as his wife, men are by nature hunters and dominion takers. Then they can become content when they catch their deer or their dear ! One of my wife’s close friends observed that before she was married, her future husband sent flowers and cards, opened the door of the car, called her “sweetheart,” and checked with her on the phone. This continued until after the honeymoon. She was perplexed that since that time there had been no cards, flowers, phone calls at work, or tender “sweetheart” words being said. I told Pam to tell her that her fellow loved the chase to get her, but now that he had his catch, the chase was over and he was no longer inspired. It’s like a deer hunter once deer
