death and hell! The enemy takes advantage of bad circumstances, personal and family conflicts, rebellion in children, and other forms of disruptions, distractions, and discouragement to strike a blow. Lot was “oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked” (2 Pet. 2:7). David confessed he was “weak . . . though anointed king” (2 Sam. 3:39). Christ was hungry, and then the enemy commanded Him to prove His Sonship by turning rocks into loaves of bread (Matt. 4:3). Another example is Samson. His private demon was his attraction to Philistine women. This strong man of Israel would sneak across the Israeli border to the land of his enemies, spending the night in the house of a Philistine beauty queen named Delilah. She continually “vexed” Samson with her words, attempting to pull from him the secret of his physical strength. Scripture says: “And it came to pass, when she pestered him daily with her words and pressed him, so that his soul was vexed to death, that he told her all his heart . . . ” (Judg. 16:16–17). Literally this woman wore Samson down emotionally with her continual demand for his greatest secret. She may have used that old ploy, “If you really love me, you will tell me!” A person will often submit to temptation in an area of personal weakness easier than to one that person has the strength to resist. A door must be opened for the entrance of a private demon, which is a personal and private battle that no one sees in public, but you wrestle with it in private.
