and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God” (1 John 3:9). Then we read: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). This seems to be a contradiction. We cannot sin, and yet we have sin . This enigma can be answered when asking “Could Jesus have sinned?” Christ was tempted as we are, yet He did not sin (Heb. 4:15). Physically, Christ had the ability to sin in His flesh, just as any human man can sin with his. However, Christ’s desire to follow the will of His father and walk in complete obedience formed a restraint against the power of sin over Him. He had the potential of sin, but through resistance to evil He gained power over sin! We all have a potential of sinning, but when our determination for right is stronger than our desire for wrong, then we defeat the devil! Satan can only possess the willing. Believers are commanded, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). W HAT D OES A S PIRIT A TTACK IN A C HRISTIAN ? Since man is a tripartite being consisting of a body, soul, and spirit, then there are three possible areas where the adversary can attack. The body of a believer is called the “temple of God,” and the Spirit of God dwells in a believer (1 Cor. 3:16). Paul was using an analogy of the temple in Jerusalem with which all Jews were familiar, comparing it to a believer. Just as a believer has a body, soul, and spirit, the temple in Jerusalem had three separate areas that were constructed as one building
