Joshua never named a successor before he died, and two generations later, Israel entered into apostasy. Elisha received a double portion of Elijah, but he never transferred the anointing to another prophet. Elisha died and took the power he had to his grave. The reason for raising your children and grandchildren in truth and righteousness is so that you can leave a heritage, a spiritual legacy that can be passed on. Building Legacies There are three things you can impart to your descendants before you depart this life besides leaving their names to receive material possessions in a will. 1. A heritage —something that’s not material, such as traditions, handed down from one generation to the next 2. A legacy —passing on a good name, including corporations, teams, and goods continually used 3. A dynasty —a succession of rulers, or a group maintaining power from the same
