right—but because when He speaks an everlasting covenant, it is everlasting . God promised the land to the Jews and promised Jerusalem to the seed of David, also the Jews. Some Christians will counter by saying, “How can you teach that the Jews have any covenant with God, when numerous Jews are atheists and agnostics, and some actually have animosity toward Christians?” First, some covenants are unconditional, and others are conditional. The Jews are promised the land of Israel and Jerusalem, and these promises were sealed with Abraham and David, as we have written. God kept His Word for Abraham’s and David’s sake, not because His chosen ethnic people were walking in complete obedience (although Paul wrote in Romans 11 that there is a remnant who obeys the covenant). In fact, Israel was held to a higher accountability than all other nations because they were accountable for the knowledge they have. When they walked in the covenant, they were blessed above all nations. However, when they mingled with idolatry, forgot the Sabbath, built graven images, and forsook the covenant, they were taken into captivity to other tribes and nations. Paul reveals that in time to come: “All Israel will be saved” (Rom. 11:26). God honors His unconditional covenants not because people are good, but because He is good and true to His Word, just as He was with the descendants of David. Second, God cannot go back on His written or spoken Word. When He insisted on destroying Israel for worshiping the golden calf, Moses reminded God of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and suddenly God repented
