from their father’s house to journey to the Promised Land, with little concern for the personal inheritance they would never receive. The blessings on Jacob had multiplied far beyond the level of Abraham and Isaac. There were now twelve branches on the family tree, and fruit (spiritual and material prosperity) was beginning to be seen. Fourth Generation—Protecting the Tree Seventy souls came from the loins of Jacob (Exod. 1:5). These seventy included his twelve sons, their children, and their children’s children. Jacob’s twelve sons were called the sons of Jacob and, eventually, the children of Israel (v. 1). This large family became the nation of Israel. During a global famine, Jacob had to move the family to Egypt to protect the family tree . He knew there was a time to stay in one place and a time to move on to another. Jacob’s sons were the fourth generation fromAbraham. In any business or family, the fourth generation is the most critical for the legacy to continue. For example, Moses was the first generation out of Egypt, and Joshua was the second. Joshua had elders who had seen the great works of the Lord. However, there arose another generation (fourth generation) that “did not know the LORD nor the work which He had done for Israel” (Judg. 2:10). This (fourth) generation went into apostasy, resulting in judges and deliverers being raised up to break their captivity and return them back to the Torah.
