Jacob was loyal to his assignment, even when he was mistreated (Gen. 31:7). Jacob was focused on what he wanted (Rachel) and allowed nothing to prevent him from getting it. Jacob was under a special generational covenant blessing through his father Isaac (Gen. 27:27). These same four principles—hard work, loyalty to the vision, determination, and walking in a covenant relationship with God—can release God’s favor in your life. Jacob was obsessed with his dream. He wanted Rachel for his wife, and this desire became his motivation for working. You may have a goodly heritage, but God cannot bless the hands of a lazy person who is not consistent in following a dream or vision or fulfilling the purposes of God. The blessings that God had placed upon Jacob were recognized by those for whom he worked. Laban realized, “The Lord has blessed me for your sake” (Gen. 30:27). Laban knew he had little when Jacob arrived, but twenty years later God had blessed the hard work of Jacob, and now both Laban and Jacob were enjoying the fruits of Jacob’s labor. Jacob’s wives, Leah and Rachel, confessed that their father had spent their inheritance, leaving them with nothing. Laban had “completely consumed [their] money” (Gen. 31:15).
