Proverbs and the Wisdom Principles It is common for Jewish sages to address their students as “my son.” Solomon’s wisdom principles were often addressed in this manner. Various proverbs begin by saying, “My son,” then proceed to give these instructions: My son, hear the instruction of your father —Proverbs 1:8. My son, if sinners entice you [to sin], don’t consent—Proverbs 1:10. My son, do not walk in the way with them [sinners]—Proverbs 1:15. My son, receive my words and treasure my commands—Proverbs 2:1. My son, don’t forget God’s laws and keep His commandments—Proverbs 3:1. My son, don’t despise God’s chastening and correction—Proverbs 3:11. My son, don’t let the commandments depart from your eyes—Proverbs 3:21. Solomon is clear that a wise son and a wise man would not
