—2 Chronicles 1:11–12 Solomon wrote the first twenty-nine chapters in Proverbs and penned Ecclesiastes—books identified as biblical wisdom literature . Proverbs consists of thirty-one chapters, the last two added by an unknown person (perhaps King Hezekiah). The Proverbs teach practical wisdom principles for daily living. Throughout the book, three words are consistently emphasized: knowledge is mentioned forty-three times, understanding is referred to fifty-five times, and the word wisdom is emphasized fifty-four times. These three key words unlock Solomon’s wisdom doors for spiritual, emotional, mental, and financial increase. Following Solomon’s three-step pattern will move a person from average to above average. Solomon knew: Knowledge is the accumulation of facts. Understanding is the arrangement of facts. Wisdom is the application of those facts. Parents, educators, and teachers can impart knowledge by reading books to their children or students (or recommending books to read), through personal example, and by direct teaching. Knowledge can also be received through personal life experiences. Knowledge without understanding, however, is like a computer with a hard drive filled with information that is never turned on.
