—Deuteronomy 8:18 The Hebrew word wealth in this passage is chayil and alludes to resources, goods, and riches. God was guaranteeing the Hebrews abundant resources as a reward for following His covenant. This blessing cycle would repeat each year. For example, the rain caused the grains to grow, producing a plentiful harvest of grains and fruits. The animals produced the milk, cheese, and meat. The food and animal products could be personally enjoyed or sold for profit. Thus a cycle of blessing began with something as common as rain! Without rain, droughts occurred, followed by famines; therefore rain represented prosperity. God’s pledges of prosperity in His Word have been read by believers for centuries, yet the teaching on prosperity has only recently resurfaced. Why did previous generations not emphasize or teach business/blessing principles that devout Jews have known and acknowledged for thirty-five hundred years? Coming from four generations of ministers, I will answer this question based upon my personal experience and observation. A Poverty Mind-set Both my grandfathers and their fathers were West Virginia coal miners. In the early 1930s, mining was a laborious, backbreaking job, executed with a pick and shovel.
