In Israel, figs have been a staple for thousands of years. We know that the fig tree was one of the main trees in the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3:7). Figs are a sweet delight to eat and are high in potassium. Potassium is important in producing energy for our bodies and assisting cell membranes. Research shows figs have been effective in lowering high blood pressure. In the Mediterranean, fig leaves have been used to reduce and lower the insulin levels in diabetic patients and can assist in lowering triglycerides in the bloodstream.6 5. Pomegranates The pomegranate is considered a holy fruit for several reasons. According to rabbis, there are 613 deeds and commandments that are required of the Jews in the Torah. Tradition says there are 613 individual seeds in a mature pomegranate. Thus, the pomegranate is an image of the commandments of God. The top of both pillars at the entrance to Solomon’s temple were hand-carved pomegranates. The hem of the high priest’s garment was graced with golden bells and small carved pomegranates (1 Kings 7:18; Exod. 28:34). Recent research has revealed that the pomegranate is extremely rich in antioxidants, and pomegranate juice is excellent in keeping blood platelets from clumping together and forming blood clots. Other research indicates that 8 ounces of pomegranate juice daily for three months increased the oxygen to the heart muscle.
