When God needed an ark builder, Noah was born. When He needed a man to save the Hebrews from starvation, Joseph was born. When He needed a deliverer, Moses arrived. When He needed a judge, Deborah was on the earth. Spiritual voids in the kingdom of God give God opportunities to birth future leaders. God told Jeremiah, “Before I formed you . . . I ordained you a prophet . . . ” (Jer. 1:5). When Hannah realized that Israel was in spiritual decline and the ministry team at the tabernacle was living in sin, she pledged that her son would change the course of the nation by setting a public example of a Nazirite vow. God needed a voice, and Samuel would speak. God needed a Nazirite, and Samuel would follow a vow. God needed a prophet, and Samuel would be it. God needed an example, and Samuel would live it. God’s need became Hannah’s passion, and when intercession collided with need, an infant’s laugh once again echoed from a tent—as in the days of Abraham and Sarah. What This Means to a Barren Woman These inspired stories “happened to them as examples” (1 Cor. 10:11). Hannah gives a powerful pattern of prayer for a barren woman to pray. It begins with a strong desire for a child that nothing can quench, such as when Rachel cried out, “Give me
