Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, But shall speak with their enemies in the gate. —Psalm 127:3–5 Israel was God’s plan, Abraham’s vision, and Jacob’s dream, evolving out of the barren wombs of three matriarchs. Four hundred years after Abraham’s vision, one man’s seed had produced six hundred thousand Hebrew men of war marching across the Red Sea with their wives and little ones (Exod. 12:37). Today an estimated 15 million Jews live on the earth, with an estimated 5.5 million Jews living in Israel. Not bad for one man whose wife couldn’t conceive until she was ninety! Children, especially sons, were important to the ancients. A man’s family name and legacy are carried on through the son. Many couples, however, would be happy just to hear the laughter of one infant—girl or boy—echoing through the halls of their home. The voice of infertility has muted the laughter. The wonderful news is there are promises in the Word of God revealing that God can and will cause the barren to rejoice and give birth. Four Promises for a Barren Woman The Jewish faith understands the importance of reading, believing, and praying the Scriptures. Often Christians read a scripture, but we seldom confess aloud and repeat what we have read, and rarely if ever do we sing a promise from God’s Word. Yet Isaiah spoke of the barren singing:
