What God Knew The meaning of names is very significant to God, and often the destiny of the person is linked to the meaning of the name. Joseph had two sons in Egypt: Ephraim and Manasseh. The name Manasseh was given because God had made Joseph to forget all his toil. Ephraim meant, “God has made me fruitful” (Gen. 41:51–52). These sons indicated a new beginning for Joseph. The names of redeemed believers are written in a book in heaven, and God promises a new name for us in heaven (Rev. 2:17). If names are this important to God, then names and their meaning should be important to us. What Devout Jews Know Devout Jews understand the importance of giving a meaningful name to their children. Traditionally, the name of a son is not revealed until the day of his circumcision. The announcement is highly anticipated and often followed by tears and rejoicing when the name of the child is announced before family and friends. What Christians Should Know The Scriptures indicate we should properly name our children, train them in the ways of God, pray over them, and bless them with our words through the laying on of hands.
