aspects of God’s commandments to ensure God’s continual favor. Teaching began at an early age. From a Hebraic perspective, training a child is more than consistently instructing a child in right and wrong. Every child is born with a distinct personality, certain inner gifts, and abilities that are as unique as that child’s individual fingerprints. As children grow from infant to child, child to teen, and teen to young adult, the parents are to discern the inclinations and possible gifts within the child’s personality, tapping into the possibilities of how God can and will use the child to fulfill his or her appointed destiny. Scripture tells us: “Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart” (Ps. 37:4). Traditionally, this has been interpreted as, “Whatever we desire, God will give it to us.” We know God answers prayer and grants petitions (John 14:13; 16:23). However, another way of interpreting Psalm 37:4 is that God gives, or places in our hearts, certain desires that He will help us to fulfill. Christian teenagers often request prayer for God’s will to be done in their lives. I reply, “What do you feel deep in your spirit that you want to do?” After they answer the question, I respond, “Then make preparations to do it.” Their concern is, “What if it is not what God wants?” The answer is, “Who do you think gave you the desire that is in your heart and the inclination toward that particular gift or career? God gave you those desires, and God will help you fulfill them.” These inclinations begin early in life, and directing them must begin early.
