Jewish Secrets to Training Children Most Christians know the verse, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Prov. 22:6). The Western notion of training a child includes verbal instruction and education mixed with correction when necessary. The Hebrew verb translated “train” is chanak and has become part of contemporary Hebrew terminology for learning. Today chinuch means “education,” and mekhanekh alludes to an educator. The Hebrew word child is na`ar and can refer to the age between childhood and maturity.19 The Torah instructs parents to teach the words of God to their children and their children after them (Deut. 4:9; 6:7). The Talmud reveals the father’s significance in teaching his son by saying: “The father is bound in respect of his son, to circumcise . . . teach him Torah, take a wife for him, and teach him a craft” (The Talmud, Kiddushin 29a). In ancient Israel, the men were the spiritual leaders at home and providers for their families. The priests were the spiritual leaders at the temple who daily practiced the sacrificial and ceremonial aspects of the law for and on behalf of the people. The prophets taught the revealed instructions of God, pronounced blessings for obedience, and warned of impending judgment if the nation rejected the moral, social, and judicial commandments.
