obedience - its curse, its dominion, its evil nature and workings. Disobedience was the root of all sin and misery. The first object of His salvation was to cut away the evil root and restore man to his original destiny — a life in obedience to his God.” (The Believer's Secret of Obedience, by Andrew Murray, Bethany House Publishers, p. 25) "For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the in ward man: But I see another law in my members, war ring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members." Romans 7:19-23

Paul described it as follows:

Clearly, the desire to sin is present even at the same time as the mind desires to obey God. Sin is an integral part of us. That is why I call it our "sin nature.”Scripture refers to this sin nature in different ways. Sometimes it is called our "old man."

"Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him [Jesus], that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin." Romans 6:6

"But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him." Colossians 3:8-10 Sometimes scripture calls this sin nature our "flesh," or our "carnal nature."
