But soon after being alerted, the urgency of the situation commandeered his morning schedule. He politely excused himself, made a brief statement to the press and was whisked away to Air Force One to be flown to an undisclosed location. By this time there were rumors that the terrorists knew how to find the President, even if he was aboard the flying White House. No one wanted to take a chance those rumors were true, and so an immediate return to Washington was out of the question. From the Chief Executive to the teenager flipping hamburgers, it was obvious that everyone was caught off guard and was uncertain of what was going to happen next. Why were we caught off guard? Because this is America! Things like this don't happen here . . . but they did that day. It seemed that God had ordained it! Americans have long believed that this "nation under God" was protected from foreign invaders. Even after Pearl Harbor was attacked, no one seriously considered the continental United States under threat. And whether all generations of Americans have acknowledged it or not, the true reason we have felt this comfortable and secure is because throughout our history, God has, without fail, intervened on our behalf. From the moment the first Pilgrims disembarked from the Mayflower, it was obvious that great things were destined for this nation under the watchful eye of a sovereign God. During the Revolution, when there were so many opportunities for the British to annihilate the ragtag Continental Army and squelch the Revolution, the colonists watched in awe as God granted them a way to
