the seven planets. Called the menorah, it consisted of seven gold branches filled with olive oil that provided light for the holy place: The Temple ... had in it three things that were very wonderful and famous among all mankind: the candlestick, the table (of shewbread), and the altar of incense. Now the seven lamps signified the seven planets; for so many there were springing out of the candlestick (Josephus, War of the Jews , V.3). A LIGNMENT AT THE T IME OF C REATION Modern computer software can now trace the position of the sun, moon and stars in history as far back as 3996 B.C. According to some models, the seven planets were in a straight line at the time of the creation of Adam. This alignment was similar to the seven lamps sitting on top of the menorah. According to computer models, a similar alignment occurred the year that Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed, and on August 3, 70 A.D. when the Temple was destroyed On December 1, 1997, the moon and eight of the planets lined up in a straight line. This alignment lasted for eight days and occurred during the Jewish celebration called Hanukkah, also known as the Feast of Lights. From west to east it was Pluto, Mercury, Mars, Neptune, Jupiter and Saturn.
