 It was given unto him to make war (v. 7). Even in John's writings, the beloved disciple distinguished the spirit of antichrist from the person of Antichrist. In 1 John 2:22, the Greek Interlinear reads, "Who is the liar if it is not the one that denies that Jesus is Christ? This is the Antichrist." The phrase "the antichrist" is ho antichristos and alludes to a specific person. The spirit of antichrist was working in John's day as heretics were writing against Christ's deity, but the Antichrist, the man of end-time prophecy, is yet to come. N AMES G IVEN TO THE A NTICHRIST Bible scholars for centuries have identified many other passages that speak of this final world leader. The Scripture gives a list of names that help us to further identify this man. The names are descriptive words; they identify the character and the nature of this man who will be the Antichrist. 1.
