How to Teach the Word to Your Family

In Deuteronomy 4, Moses gave instructions from God to heads of households about specific ways in which they were to teach their families His Word. First, he said, Be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. (v. 9) God is saying to men, ―Don‘t let My ways out of your sight. Make sure you understand and obey them first. Then “teach them to your children and to their children after them.” Why? Because you are supposed to be the teacher. Don‘t just tell your children, ―Do this,‖ or ―Don‘t do that.‖ Show them. Watch your life and make sure you keep

the Word of God. Some men say one thing but do another. For example, they may tell their children to be honest but then call off work when they‘re not sick. S ome fathers tell their children, ―Tobacco is bad for you,‖ while at the same time they‘re puf f ing away on a cigarette. Do you know what

children see when they see adults smoking? They see an adult world, and they say, ―To be a grown -up, you have to smoke.‖ Adults reinforce this idea by their a ctions. God tells us not to do this to our children. People don‘t seem to understand that you cannot teach something if you‘re not being an example of it yourself. A good teacher is one who teaches by example. “Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” I want to say a word here to grandparents.
