(Mark 4:38). Later, while Christ was ministering at the temple in Jerusalem, the people took up stones to stone Him. Once again He escaped without a scratch (John 10:31, 39). When Satan placed the thought in the heart of Judas to betray Christ for thirty pieces of silver, I wonder if Judas, who had seen Christ escape from the enemy’s hands many times, assumed Christ could or would do it again. Or did he think that if Christ was the real King of Israel, this would be His golden opportunity to rise to the occasion, overthrow the Romans, and capture the throne promised to the Messiah, the son of David? After realizing he had participated in a death plot involving shedding innocent blood, Judas threw the money back at the priests in the temple, repented to himself (meaning he had remorse), and hung himself from a tree on the edge of the Valley of Hinnom, outside of the walls of Jerusalem (Acts 1:16–19). THE BAAL CUTTERS Young people often turn to cutting because they think no one is listening to them and the only way they can get attention is to do something so dramatic it will cause their parents or friends to pay attention to their pain. The false prophets of Baal had the same goal of gaining attention when they met the prophet Elijah on Mount Carmel and were challenged by him to a contest—the God who would answer by fire would be identified as the true God.
