To prove this can be called a suicide spirit (a spirit sending thoughts of self-destruction and hopelessness into the mind of this man), when the demons were expelled from the man, they entered into a large herd of swine, causing the wild pigs to run “violently” down a steep place, tumbling like broken rocks from an avalanche into the sea, where the entire herd choked and drowned in the water (v. 13). There are different types of evil and unclean spirits, each with a different assignment, targeting humanity with temptations and bondages. In one biblical narrative a young boy was possessed with a spirit that caused seizures. The father confessed that the spirit would overtake his son; he had often “thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him” (Mark 9:22). Here the Greek word for “destroy” does not mean just to do harm; it is the Greek word appollumi , which means to fully destroy .
