was possessed with more than two thousand unclean spirits that were driving him to harm himself. Observe the wording of the verse in this narrative: And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones. —MARK 5:5 This mentally tormented man was not living with his family, with friends, or even in the community, but he was staying in the local graveyard, which metaphorically can represent memories of past things as graves hold no life, only memories of a past life. Notice he was awake day and night, meaning he was unable to sleep properly because of the spirits that were tormenting him day and night. The Bible also says he was “crying,” but the original Greek word used in this passage is not the normal word for shedding tears when a person is sad or upset. It is the word krazo , which means, “to scream; to shriek and call aloud.” 1 His cry was one of inner torment, screaming night and day because he was unable to free himself from his mentally tortured condition. The phrase “cutting himself with stones” is interesting for several reasons. We read where men attempted to bind him with fetters and chains, but these devices were like toothpicks and waxas he flexed his muscles and broke the metal chains and wooden fetters from off himself. The townspeople were in great fear for their safety, seeing his violent nature. Many times I have been to the ancient ruins in Israel where this event happened.
