Chapter 4 BREAKING THE SPIRITS OF CUTTING AND SUICIDE

T HERE ARE MANY PARENTS WHO ARE UNAWARE THAT TWO of the most serious and dangerous attacks on this generation of youth are cutting and suicide . I have personally seen youth with scars on their arms where they have taken a sharp object and make a cut into their arms, just enough to bleed. The reasons vary, and I will not go into detail, other than to say that one young person said that many young people feel so dull and numb to the negative events of their lives that they do this to feel pain and to know they are still living and have feelings . One of the saddest moments in any ministry or family is to hear of a young person who took his or her own life because of feeling rejected in a relationship, or because he or she was being bullied and had become isolated from others. Oddly, in the Bible there was one man who was both a cutter and suicidal . This unnamed fellow was living in the land of the Gaderenes, a region on the Syrian side of the Sea of Galilee. He
