dogs barking, cats meowing, cows mooing, and roosters crowing! He lived in the world’s first garden zoo ! But the animals couldn’t kiss him, hug him around the neck, and tell him “I love you.” Thus, to prevent loneliness, God created a physical companion, Eve, as it was not (and is not) good for a man to be alone. When Jacob was alone , he wrestled a man until the breaking of day (Gen. 32:24). Jacob’s wrestling began at night and didn’t conclude until the sun was rising. Using this as a spiritual example of loneliness, one reason it is not good to be alone—in isolation—is because a lonely person will wrestle with a bombardment of arrows striking the mind with no one present to talk to, share with, or help carry the weight. As the sun sets and the dark hours of the night eventually give way to the breaking of day, a person alone without love will be exhausted from all the mind wrestling. It may seem frivolous to point this out, but this is one excellent reason for a person to have a pet, some living creature in his or her home or apartment that he or she can share time and attention with. Pets, including cats, dogs, and even horses, are being used for recovery therapy. If pets are good therapy, then I am in extremely fine emotional, mental, and physical condition! We have two cats, two pocket parrots, and a large African gray parrot whose vocabulary includes imitating the cat’s meow, sounding like the ring on a cell phone, and inspiring my wife daily with the words, “Roll Tide . . . Roll Tide . . . ” It is, however, rather odd when a couple, especially the female, visits the house and suddenly hears whistling . . . you know the kind you used to do when your wife walked into the room!
