David’s fivefold pattern for decline reveals that his failure was not a sudden, overwhelming urge that he could not resist, but it was well orchestrated for his personal pleasure. THE ROOTS OF FAILURE For many years I was puzzled as to how a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam 13:14) and a godly king would allow himself to fall so low into such a trap of adultery, conspiracy, and murder. Perhaps David assumed that with Bathsheba’s husband (Uriah) out of town, he would never discover their indiscretion. With the men of Israel at war, few people would ever see the secret entry into the palace, and neither he nor she thought she would end up pregnant. Thus, David thought that he and Bathsheba would sneak into the palace, in the bed, out of the bed, out of the palace, and back home without any observation. However, the real question becomes not how the plan was set up but what motivated the setup to begin with. The easier explanation is that David fell into a burning lust, and Bathsheba willingly submitted. However, behind every major spiritual calamity is a hidden root buried underneath the rubble.
