struggle with a hot temper, quit excusing it by saying, “You know Dad had a violent temper, so I get it from him!” If you battle depression, put a stop to justifying its grip by saying, “All the women on Mom’s side of the family suffer depression.” If your dad and granddad loved pornography, don’t give the enemy any place by saying, “It’s just a weakness that runs in the family, and all of us men have it!” Remember, you will never change what you permit, and never challenge what you allow. There is power in the blood of Christ, the name of Christ, and in His authority to loose you from the influence of any type of spirit. Ask and pray in faith. This promise is for all who need freedom from satanic opposition: Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. —JAMES 4:7–8 The word submit here is an old English word meaning, “to be subject to,” and refers to a lesser one submitting to a greater one. The verb means, “to place or arrange under.” The word resist means, “to array against,” and the implication is that if you will place yourself under God’s instruction, direction, and protection, placing yourself under His authority, then you will be able to resist and withstand (stand against) any assault of the enemy. 8 This includes defeating and expelling any spirit— past, present, or future—as Christ has. “All authority . . . in heaven and on earth” (Matt. 28:18).
