And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. LOOSED FROM THE ENEMY’S HOLD The Greek word for “loose” here is luo and refers to “loose, unbind and to release.” It includes loosing shoes (Mark 1:7), of animals (Matt. 21:2), and of persons (John 11:44). To loose something in Matthew 16:19 was to undo on earth what had been undone in heaven. The idea of spiritually binding and loosing is understood in Mark 7:35, where Jesus “loosed” the tongue of a person who was unable to speak, curing the man and enabling him to speak for the first time in his life. Also, in Luke 13:12 Christ prayed for a woman with a spirit of infirmity and commanded, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” The spirit of weakness immediately departed when Christ released the woman from her eighteen-year-long sickness. God’s will in heaven was to undo the sin, sickness, and infirmity placed upon humanity. God’s servants on earth are to act upon their delegated spiritual authority and release those on earth who are bound by sin and eternal death, and to take authority over all the power of the enemy! Greek scholar Tony Scott said that the word loose has the original meaning of two boards that were glued together and the glue was bad, thus the two boards “come unglued” or they “lose consistency.” 7 Using this imagery, the adversary has some people glued to a hard bondage, an addiction, or a lifestyle of sin.
