It has been reported that almost every family in Haiti has someone who practices voodoo—serves the spirits, who holds the “traditional beliefs.” 3 It should be pointed out that Haiti is considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, as poverty always follows the worship of false gods or idols. Years ago I ministered in a Mississippi church in which the pastor was a former missionary leader in Haiti for a major denomination. He was in Haiti when President Kennedy announced the blockade against Cuba (with other countries inside the blockade zone, including Haiti), and he related to me a story that was known at that time among the voodoo high priests. He said that “Papa Doc” called into his palace the most powerful voodoo priests, instructing them to create a voodoo doll to represent President Kennedy. During the actual ritual large pins were placed into the back of the head of the doll, placing incantations and curses upon the American president and requesting a powerful spirit to be released against him and for someone to be found to kill Kennedy.
