The same is true, however, when evil men pass on their evil inclinations into the bloodline of their future sons. THE TERRORISTS OF GADARA Travel back in time with me to the lower Galilee, where on the eastern mountains surrounding the famous Sea of Galilee a small city called Gadara existed—part of ten Hellenized cities called the Decapolis—and it was buzzing with activity. These cities were dominated with Greek culture, including pagan temples built in which to worship idols. In that time when an inhabitant of the cities died, his body was wrapped in linen and the corpse slid into a long niche carved inside a large limestone cavern called a sepulture . In the narrative in Mark 5, these carved chambers in rock were called “tombs” (Mark 5:2). After the physical body deteriorated (about one year after burial), the bones were washed and permanently placed in a small stone carved boxcalled an ossuary , and the new box of bones received permanent residence in one of the many niches in the whitewashed limestone sepultures. In Mark 5 an unnamed man was living among the graves of the dead and was terrorizing the community. His cries were heard night and day; some attempted to bind him with chains and fetters, and he would break them. Eventually Jesus came to town and cast the evil spirits out of the man.
