First, Jacob came up with a plan of how to meet Esau and protect his family at the same time (Gen. 33:1–3). When we wrestle with our inner me, removing spiritual hindrances, God will initiate creative ideas, spiritual strategies, and plans we were previously unaware of. Second, the angel touched Jacob’s thigh and gave him a limp for life . Jacob was a man on the run for many years, but now he could no longer run away from adversity; he was required to be totally dependent upon God. Third, Jacob also received a major name change , from Jacob to Israel, the name ordained of God for the new nation promised to Abraham, his grandfather. The name Jacob in Hebrew is Ya’akov , from three Hebrew root letters: ayin , kuf , and vet . When Jacob and his twin, Esau, were born, Jacob grabbed the heel of Esau; the Hebrew word for “heel” is ah’kev. Jacob’s name was given because of catching on to the heel of his brother at birth. Also, the three root letters in Ya’akov — ayin , kuf , vet (or akov )—mean crooked, or insidious, and the Hebrew word aikev means struggling. To Esau, his brother was a crooked deceiver, but to Jacob himself he was in a continual struggle, from the moment he wrestled in his mother’s womb to the time he wrestled an angel. When the angel changed his name, he said Jacob would now be called Israel. 1 His birth name was inspired from grabbing his brother’s heel and wrestling in his mother’s womb. His new name, Israel, was given because he had wrestled with God and prevailed! When forming an acrostic with the name Israel, and placing the Hebrew letter equivalent beside the English letter, we see how each letter is the first letter in the names of the major patriarch
