There are so many believers, especially in North America, who are physically out of shape, and the junk foods they eat are causing mental fog, physical sluggishness, and even medical problems that are harming their bodies. Years ago I went from 225 pounds to 258 and felt totally out of control, tired, and sluggish. I finally decided to lose weight (about 40 pounds); I began exercising, and getting my body under subjection. This change in lifestyle actually made me feel twenty years younger (I said feel , not look !), with more energy and strength. It is impossible to fight a physical, mental, and, at times, spiritual battle without having energy in your body. Alexander knew that for his troops to perform at peak ability, they must be well fed. They all ate well prior to any major battle. The spiritual parallel In 1 Samuel 14 Saul was engaged in a battle, and his troops were hungry. He placed a foolish vow on his army demanding death to anyone who would seek out food to eat before the battle was over. Jonathan, the son of Saul, broke his father’s vow; he dipped his rod in a honey comb, eating the honey and receiving strength (v. 29).
