Each man trained with the intent of winning the particular contest he was to be engaged in. In the listing of the armor of God, Paul said that we “wrestle.” There were many different games in which men competed during the Greek Olympics or during the times of various festivals. However, wrestling is different because of three things. 1. You must always face your opponent and never turn your back, as if you turn, you will be slammed to the ground and penned in a dangerous position. 2. You must always watch and make eye contact with your opponent, otherwise a sudden move will be made that will catch you off guard, giving the advantage to your opponent. 3. The third aspect is that wrestling is the only sport in which you never lose physical contact with your opponent. Thus, wrestling is a face-to-face, eye-to-eye, hand-to-hand, and body-to-body contact sport. In the believer’s case, it is not a sport but a matter of life and death. In junior high school in northern Virginia I played three different sports: football, track, and wrestling. I tried out for basketball, but the other guys were just far better, so I never made the cut. Football practice was very intense and tiring, but
